INEC declares APC’s Ikeje Asogwa winner of Enugu North bye-election
Ikeje Asogwa has emerged the winner of the Enugu North senatorial by-election, trouncing his contenders with wide margins.
Asogwa won with 162,360 votes while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnered meagre 9,299 votes. Other contenders all made so unimpressive outings that it is clearly a waste of time remembering their individual scores in the polls. But the performance of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was extraordinarily conspicuous. It’s candidate, Mr Oscar Ossai, failed with 3,129 votes.
Announcing the result earlier today in Nsukka, the Returning Officer for the election, Christian Ezeibe, Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), declared Mr Ikeje Asogwa the winner.
“Asogwa having satisfied the requirements of the law in this election is hereby declared the winner and is returned.
“I thank you all for your cooperation, support and maturity that made the by-election a success,” Ezeibe said.
Voters turnout was abysmally low. According to the Returning Officer, of the 727,340 registered voters in Enugu North only 184,094 were accredited.
The bye-election was conducted to replace former Senator Ayogu Eze who had represented the district before his death on November 2025 at the age of 62.
