Former governor of Enugu State Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has submitted his letter of credence to Greece, officially assuming the roles as the Nigeria’s ambassador to the Hellenic Republic.
Nominated ambassador on November 29, 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, Ugwuanyi was deployed to Greece on March 6, 2026. He reached Athens on July and submitted his credentials.
What is Ambassador’s letter of credence?
Letter of credence is a diplomatic document that a president or Head of State would give to ambassadors to introduce them to the leader of another country. It serves, first, as a sign of authority; what this means is that the host country is fully notified that the ambassador has all the right to make decisions for his country.
It’s also the letter to show the ambassador has officially started his work. In the other words, it’s only when the letter is submitted to the host country that such person officially becomes an ambassador.
Another aspect of letter of credence is that its traditionally written in French which is the historical language of diplomacy. At the end of ambassador’s term, another letter called letter of recall is sent to the host country. Therefore, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is now the confirmed ambassador to the Hellenic Republic.
Under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Opunimi Akinkugbe (a.k.a Nimi Akinkugbe) was Nigeria’s ambassador to Greece. She was nominated on July 2020, but it wasn’t until June 2021 that she submitted her letter of credence.
