Enugu APC Youths leader makes his first public outings

The youths leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Enugu State tested his public acceptance in his first public outing.

Weeks ago, the State Working Committee of the party has announced Mr Basil Ojengwa the youths leader. A bright and ebullient youth himself, Ojengwa is a stark opposite of his immediate predecessor, late Hon Bennett Ajah.

His outting today wasn’t particularly political. He went on a condolence visit to the family of late Chief Francis Ogbonnaya Chukwu, former APC chieftain.

But there was something notable in it. Mass of enthusiastic supporters, falling over Ojengwa, with ogene songs adding to the vibes from the background.

The youths must have seen Ojengwa for what he is: a true rising stars and an unarguable force in the coming elections in Enugu State. They presented him with a black suit, a gesture which still baffles the public.

In his address, Mr Ojengwa told the crowd their interests would be protected, and emphasized that Governor Peter Mbah merited reelection in 2027.

Aninri was, or still, is a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party. Governor Mbah may have renamed the structures to APC, but whether or not the people would embrace the “new” party is already tested.

During the party’s e-membership registration exercise months ago, Aninri openly scorned APC. The big efforts to recruit voters abysmally failed as even the agents themselves went out their ways to sabotage the exercise.

Despite PDP’s decades of stay in Aninri, it relied on rigging for all of its victories. Unless APC is capable of magic, it can’t win a polling unit in the 2027 elections in Aninri – if things continue the way it is. In coming days, how Mr Ojengwa handles the deep-rooted gaps between the people and party politics would nurse some hope or further set the course in the trajectory of alienation.
