Church of Scotland apologises for aiding slave trade

The Church of Scotland has come out in the open and apologised for its evil roles in slavery.

The apology was adopted, yesterday, at the General Assembly in Edinburgh.

Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in the 1830s, but before that time several members of Church of Scotland played active roles in teaching that slavery is from God.

While presenting the apology to the General Assembly, The Very Rev Sally Foster-Fulton said the impacts of slavery was much then and are still affecting a lot of people today.

“The history we consider today continues to shape our world in ways we cannot ignore,” Foster-Fulton said.

“Its consequences touch communities near and far, influencing the structures, attitudes and inequalities that persist around us.

“The legacy of slavery stretches like a shadow over our local, national and global landscape,” he continued.
