The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has named Nigerian-American businessman, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia leader of the party in Enugu State.

In a statement made available to pressmen yesterday by the state secretary of the party, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, said the new development was part of the party’s broader strategy to expand and fortify its structures ahead of 2027 general elections. Ogbonnia’s recognition was due to his overall roles in building the party across the nation and, particularly his efforts in making sure Mr Peter Obi emerged the NDC presidential candidate.

“With someone like Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the growth and stability of the NDC in Enugu State, victory is assured come 2027.

“This is because his background in business, academia and public affairs will bring valuable experience to the party’s leadership, and we believe that his experience and exposure will contribute meaningfully to the development of the NDC in Enugu State,” the statement read.

The state chairman of the party, Dr. Johnpaul Anih, in a separate occasion, equally commended the national leadership of NDC.

It’s still unclear whether or not the Enugu State NDC has resolved it’s many differences and come up with a single governorship candidate for the 2027 elections. So far, it is Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa who is more visible as the party’s flag-bearer in Enugu.

NDC is, of course, a very viable platform, some analysts believe. However, the success or failure of the opposition would depend almost solely on the whims of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Peter Obi might have greatly shifted the status quo in 2023, but 2027 obviously a different time.
