Again, Singapore population has risen to a new record of 1.6% in June compared to 2025. This is shown in the government statistics released few hours ago.

It has increased from the last year’s 6.11 million to 6.21 million people.

With approximately 710 square kilometers, Singapore is a relatively small country compared to Nigeria’s 923,768 square kilometers. That’s, Nigeria is about 1,325 bigger than the Southeast Asian nation. Yet, Singapore is about 3 times richer than Nigeria with about $97,814 per capita compared to Nigeria’s $1,214 per capita. It means that the economic output of a Singaporean citizen is more than 80 times higher than an average Nigerian citizen’s.

Singapore has seen steady increase in population after COVID-19, having relaxed it’s tough restrictions which kept foreigners out and led to population decline. There were 5.6 million and 5.9 million people in the Asian financial hub in 2022 and 2023 respectively, 30% of whom were foreigners, Reuters reported.

The new statistics shows that 1.98 million foreign residents arrived Singapore in the past 12 months. This, of course, comes with heavy political as well as economic implications. In 2013, at the suggestion that government would boost the population of the Island nation to 6.9 million by 2030, the citizens took to the streets in heavy anti-government protest as voters felt insecure about jobs and high cost of living.

To address the demographic challenges, Singapore has said it’s granting citizenship to up to 30,000 people per year over the next five years.

Singapore is the pride of Asia, attracting nearly 17 million tourists a year. The strong, visionary leadership of Lee Kuan Yew after 1965 put the nation on the map, and has cemented its appeal as the darling of international investors, traders and shippers.
