Fans, TV presenter rebuke Jérémy Doku over decision to abandon teammates
Football lovers couldn’t believe that Jérémy Doku isn’t insane. Speaking to reporters last week, the Belgium winger shocked everyone that he would be abandoning his teammates at the FIFA World Cup to meet his wife in UK.
His wife, Shireen, is due to put to bed early July and the 24-year-old is insisting he must be there to witness the childbirth.
“No one wants to miss a birth. Moreover, it is my first child. But I also know that there is a lot involved in football,” he told reporters.
People’s reactions were instant. All caustic, they came in torrents as many thought the player is not appreciative for having the rare chance to play World Cup tournament. Most notable among those criticising Jérémy Doku is L’Equipe television presenter France Pierron.
“This outrages me,” Pierron said in Friday. “When you are lucky enough to appear at a World Cup, there are hundreds of footballers who would kill to be in your place.
“It’s a unique moment, a childhood dream come true. And you’re going to walk away from that to be at the birth of your child,” he continued.
