Iraq say they’re in direct talks with the United States as effects of the US ban on Iran airlines begin to bit deeper.

According to Iraqi officials, the ban has since upset travels in their own country, particularly affecting patients, students and pilgrims who need to get to the war-torn country by air. And it’s only few days which airports in Iraq have enforced this ban.

“The Iraqi government is holding direct talks with the American side to exempt certain Iraqi airports from these measures,” the prime minister’s media office said.

Most of the Iranian airlines served to carry Iraqi Shia pilgrims when they’re visiting holy cities in Iran, and when Iranians also wanted to visit holy cities in Iraq they use mainly Iranian flights, too. Another sets of Iraqis the airlines serve are foreign students studying in Iran and the patients seeking medical treatment there.

Enforcing US ban is causing discomfort for so many Iraqis, according AFP. The option of travelling by land is also not viable for it takes approximately 12 hours to get to Iran from Iraq.

After US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent demanded that Iranian airlines must be “shut down”, Iraq has joined several Arab nations to enforce it. Iraqi airlines stopped flying into Iran since February after US and Israel launched attacks on Iran.

But then, both Shia-majority countries have been at loggerheads for some times owing to a wide range of issues including religious kinship as well as political and economic interests.
