Jonny Somali sentence in South Korea has sparked reactions across the world. The popular American YouTuber was sentenced to six months imprisonment – with hard labour.

He was charged on November 2024 after he posted a clip of himself kissing and performing lap dances on the statue representing World War II sex slaves while visiting South Korea. Ever since then, he has been barred from leaving the country.
Jonny Somali, 25, is known for posting provocative video clips, and he has been accused severally of harassing people.
Today he was convicted of multiple offences, including being a public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes.
“The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law,” the court said according to South Korean media.
The court also ruled that the livestreamer is barred from working with organisations that serve minors and people with disabilities after his release.
Although the prosecutors sought a three-year jail term, the judge said Somali’s actions didn’t cause any severe harms to the victims.

Activists have installed several statues across South Korea – all of them usually depicting a young woman seated in a chair. This was to serve as a reminder and it has, in the past, caused serious diplomatic tensions with South Korea demanding reparations from Japan.
Jonny Somali, whose real name is Ismael Ramsey Khalid, was fined 200,000 Yen in Japan for making unacceptable remarks in 2023. In 2024, authorities also detained him in Tel Aviv, Israel for over inappropriate comment towards a female police officer.
