Again, it has become hot in Plateau State. At least nine persons – including pastor and other worshippers going to church this morning – have been killed.

The killings in Barkin Ladi, Riyom and neighbouring communities in Plateau State happened under two separate attacks on Saturday evening and this morning. Five of the victims were passengers travelling to Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. They were ambushed on the road and were brutally killed by unknown assailants. A pastor and another worshipper, on their way to church at Dorowa Babuje, were also attacked and killed this morning.

Bulus Dabit, the National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), and Ukasha Garaba, Pyem Youth Leader in Gana-Ropp, all condemned the killings in separately, calling on the authorities check the rising insecurity in the affected areas.

“We evacuated the corpses of five persons from Gana-Ropp. They were passengers who were travelling as labourers,” Garaba said.

It appears that recurring attacks are not far removed from the encounter with Fulani herders in the area. Gambo Abubakar, the chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Barkin Ladi confirmed that several cattle of their members have been stolen.
