Taiwo Oyedele pinpoints errors in Nigeria new tax law

Finally, the minister of state for finance, Taiwo Oyedele, has admitted there are errors in the Nigeria’s new tax law.

His admission was not only coming late, but it’s also very embarrassing. Signed on June 26, 2025, the tax law took effect on January 1, 2026.

But it was Abdussamad Dasuki, a member of the House of Representatives from Sokoto State, who raised alarm on December 17, 2025. In essence, he said that someone altered the bill after the lawmakers passed it.

Dasuki’s revelation caused confusion, and the national assembly formed committee to that effect. Months later, it Nigerians are being told that there were, indeed, errors in the new tax law.

“That errors occurred due to manual processes and multiple stages of review”, Oyedele said during the 2026 annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Urging Nigerians to await the corrections, he said that efforts are underway to address the lapses. But there was yet another dirty confession from the finance minister.

According him, the embarrassing errors in the Nigeria new tax law occur due to lack of “more transparent and reliable legislative process”, he said.

“What we need is a more transparent and reliable legislative process where every version of a law is publicly available”, Oyedele said.
