Windstorm displaces 500, tears down 112 buildings in Aninri community as Onwuegbu intervens

Over 500 people were displaced in Oduma town as windstorm tore off roofs of approximately 112 buildings.

It struck during a heavy rain on the night of April 6, sweeping through the agrarian communities of Ukete, Oduma-Achara, Amaeke, and Mmafu.

InfoWars visited the scenes.

The affected structures include homes, schools, markets, and churches. Electricity installations were shattered, with the windstorms also uprooting and sweeping even little trees and palm trees.

The traditional ruler of Ukete Oduma, Patrick Oshiekwe, called it “hurricane”, said that destruction of that magnitude has never been witnessed in agrarian community.

“Everybody in this community is battered. Since I was born, I have never seen this kind of disaster,” Igwe, who has since allowed the displaced have temporary shelters in his palace, told the press.

A millionaire businessman, popularly known as Governor of Money, also suffer a huge loss. The wind lifted the roof off his duplex and dropped it heavily on his GLK Mercedes, smashing it.

The President General of the Town Union, Mr Jeremiah Njoku, said that 80 structures were affected, although the figures appear to be slightly higher. He said the community was overwhelmed.

“We are talking about over eighty buildings with serious damage. Our people are living in fear. This is beyond what we can handle”, Mr Njoku said.

Anayo Onwuegbu sets committee to assess the damages

The member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River federal constituency, Hon Anayo Onwuegbu has set up committee to assess the impacts of the windstorms.

According to Barr Peter Ajah who spoke with InfoWars, the committee has already swung into action.

“He saw the damages himself. He also visited those affected at Mpu town, and has quickly set up the committee”, Barr Ajah said.

After the assessments, the lawmaker is expected to take legislative actions and also involved the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at the national level to intervene, Ajah told InfoWars in a phone chat this morning.

NEMA’s Information Officer in Enugu, Mr. Ezeani Nnanyelugo, said the agency is collaborating with the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Red Cross Society to bring succour to the victims.

Aninri politicians abuse NEMA’s palliatives in the past

In the past, natural disaster has hit Aninri communities. A whopping 22,664 individuals were hit by flood in 2024, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-affiliate NGO reported.

In the past, natural disaster has hit Aninri communities. A whopping 22,664 individuals were affected by flood in 2024, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-affiliate NGO reported. There were also government interventions in Aninri in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

However, politicians did hijack the process and, in the end, shared the NEMA’s palliatives to their relations and friends in the form of political patronage.
