Google is celebrating its 28th birthday today, September 27, sharing on its homepage old doddles from its early days as a way to mark the occasion.
The company was officially launched on September 4, 1998 by two PhD students at Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
But it’s official information showed that the global tech giant effectively began earlier, on August 1998, the moment the Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim signed a $100,000 and handed to Page and Brin.
Ever since then it has been a big and steady expansion, with the company launching diverse products including Pixel phones, Android phones, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube.
The reasons why Google’s birthday is September 17 remain largely unknown. When it celebrated its 5th birthday in 2003 it was on September 8. It’s birthday was September 7 in 2004, followed by September 26 in 2005. But Google celebrated its birthday on September 27 in 2006 and has maintained that date roll today.
