Enugu State Government is out to make Awgu Game Village the best there is anywhere in the world. The sport facility has seen feverish activities for the past one month as the contractors scramble to deliver on schedule.

Its going to serve as the primary venue for the National Sports Festival which starts on November 27 and lasts till December 11, 2026.

Awgu Game Village is located around Awgu/Iffite Mmaku in Enugu State. It was initially conceived to serve as the housing for the workers and the executives of Fougerolle Construction Company in the 1980s when the then-construction giant was building Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway. Later it was handed over to Enugu State Government which converted it to sports and recreation center.

But it wasn’t long before the objectives were forgotten, and the facility completely abandoned.

Governor Peter Mbah’s decision to revive Awgu Game Village is widely hailed especially across Old Awgu where the facility is sited. And the governor is taking it even to a whole new height, the massive work exceeding original plans to include more. Its no longer a place for just football; it’s far more than that.

Some of the new construction include:

  • 1,000-capacity bed hostel
  • Standard football pitch / mini-stadium
  • Eight-lane athletics track
  • Indoor and outdoor sports courts (basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis)
  • Gymnasium and gymnastics arenas
  • Swimming pool and multi-purpose halls

When, earlier this week, Governor Mbah alongside members of the Executive Committee toured the facility, he described it as a major boost to the people of Awgu.
