Former Cabinet minister of Singapore Khaw Boon Wan had opportunity to take a break in 2020 when he retired from politics. But he was called again to fill in as the chairman of SPH Media Holdings and SPH Media Trust (SMT).

SPH Media Holdings and SPH Media Trust (SMT) are both non-profit media organizations running nearly all national publications in Singapore.

In a social media post yesterday, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong thanked Khaw for accepting to chair the media organisations after more than 40 years in public service.

SPH Media had earlier announced the change of leadership October 1, elevating it’s chief executive Chan Yeng Kit as the executive chairman of both SMT and SPH Media Holdings.

“It has been a period of major change in the media landscape. Under Boon Wan’s leadership, SPH Media strengthened its digital and multimedia capabilities, reached new audiences and continued to serve Singaporeans across our four official languages,” Prime Minister Wong said, added that Khaw’s accomplishments while there would undoubtedly continue to carry the media organisation into the future.

Other top Singaporean government officials also acknowledged Khaw’s contributions as media chief, and thanked him profusely.

Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo, in a social media post yesterday, said she knew that Khaw had preferred to focus his retirement time on his family but had agreed to chair SMT since 2021.

Khaw Boon Wan was appointed chairman of SMT in May 2021 after the publicly listed Singapore Press Holdings was restructured.
